Chinese Actor Scammed, & Trafficked

While scrolling WeChat, Chinese actor Wang Xing saw a job posting inviting actors to participate in a movie screening in Thailand. Excited about the potential role, Wang booked a flight to Thailand.

Wang thought he was traveling to Thailand to participate in a photo shoot. When he landed, he was picked up from the airport by a representative from the "company" and escorted to a shuttle. During the drive Wang began to feel uncomfortable and wisely shared his current location with his girlfriend back home in China.

Hours later, all communication stopped and Wang's girlfriend immediately alerted the Chinese authorities. She also started a viral campaign on social media gaining millions of views and attention to Wang’s situation. With the pressure from the public the Chinese and Thai government orchestrated a string of sting operations.

Wang was discovered in Myanmar, a country torn by civil war and notorious for human trafficking along its Thai border. His captors immediately shaved his head and forced him into their scam operation, making him target others just as he had been targeted. When authorities raided the compound three days later, they found approximately 50 other victims from various countries - all trapped in the same digital prison.

Wang's story matters because it exposed a terrifying evolution in human trafficking. These aren't shadowy criminals targeting the vulnerable anymore - they're sophisticated operations hunting educated professionals in broad daylight, walking them right through international airports. While Wang made it home, hundreds - no, thousands of others haven't been so lucky.
