Don't Get Hacked!
Secure Your Social Media

"If I've sent you a message, don't respond! It's not me, I've been hacked."
Chances are, you've seen this message across various social media platforms - particularly Facebook. But how do you find yourself in this situation? How are you getting hacked?
🕵️♂️ How the hack works
Behind the scenes of these "hacked" messages lies a tactic known as phishing—a deception that plays on trust and familiarity. Here's a glimpse into how it works:
1. Spoofing Identities: Scammers impersonate your friends or contacts, crafting messages that mimic their usual tone and language. This makes the message seem genuine at first glance.
2. Leveraging Trust: By exploiting the relationship you have with your friends, scammers aim to lower your guard. They'll prompt you to share sensitive info, or click on links. ( We’ll talk more about the dangers of clicking on the links later )
3. The Mirage of Urgency: Many of these messages convey a sense of urgency or importance, urging you to act swiftly without second thought. This plays on your curiosity or the natural instinct to help/ protect our friends. See below for a typical scam message you might see..

💡How to protect yourself
To avoid falling victim to these tricks, you should :
1. Verify the Source: Before taking any action, independently verify the message's authenticity. Reach out to the sender through a different channel to confirm if they indeed sent the message.
2. Check for Anomalies: Scrutinize the language, tone, and any oddities in the message. Be cautious of unsolicited requests for personal or financial information. Be aware of fake website links. Usually these links lead to fake log in pages designed to trick you into plugging in your Username & Password where the hacker collects this info. Check out the images below and notice how similar they are..
