Face ID Deep Fake
$40k Bank Withdrawal

Good Morning!
Facial recognition software is now being weaponized. The same software you might use to authenticate into your bank account, can now be used against you.
In Vietnam, a hacking group developed a fraudulent app, persuading people that they can access their penchant plans earlier. The app prompted the unsuspecting users to do conduct face scans. These face scans were then used to make high quality, Ai generated deepfakes. Using the deepfakes, the criminals were able to access a victims bank account and withdraw $40,000.

Do you use Face ID? What other apps are using your face to authenticate too?
According to a recent Threat Intelligence Report, face swap deepfake attacks surged by 704% just in the latter half of 2023. Gartner, a consulting company, expects 30% of enterprises to view biometric authentication as unreliable on their own.
This might be the signal to return back to password log-ins. Your biometrics are permanent. You can’t change your facial features. But a password can be swapped easily. Multi-factor authentication is still very much the goal for a higher level of security.

Here’s what I think…
Generative Ai is incredible. Deep fakes are scary. And the need for privacy and cyber awareness is at an all time high.
We’ll keep an eye out for other ways generative AI is being exploited and keep you updated. In the mean time, be super cautious of what apps and services are requesting face scans and other biometrics.
